4.7 million names. People with cancer. People with Alzheimer's. People whose bodies or minds are failing them in ways that make them scared, lonely, and desperate for help.

Price: eight and a half cents each.

Less than a dime to buy a human being sorted by their suffering. Less than a gumball. You could buy a hundred suffering seniors for the price of a latte and still have change left over.

This isn't a dark web auction. This isn't some encrypted hacker forum where criminals trade stolen data in cryptocurrency. This is a legitimate product sold by a legitimate American company to anyone with a credit card and a mailing address.

The company was called InfoUSA. They're publicly traded. They have a customer service line. And their marketing materials described the people on these lists as — and I want you to really savor this — "gullible."

"These people are gullible. They want to believe that their luck can change."

That's not a confession extracted under interrogation. That's not a whistleblower leaking internal documents. That's the sales pitch. That's how they moved product.

Some marketing executive typed that into a PowerPoint, presented it to a room full of people in business casual, and everyone nodded and said "great, let's go with that." Then they went to lunch.

This is a legitimate American industry worth $278 billion annually.

There are over 4,000 data broker companies operating in the United States. These companies hold more information on American citizens than the NSA, FBI, and CIA combined.

This is not hyperbole.

They know your income. Your health conditions. Your daily movements. Your anxieties, inferred from your searches. Your vulnerabilities, scored and ranked and sorted into categories with names that sound like they were invented by someone who read 1984 and thought: yeah, but how do we monetize this?
